Immunizations & Health Insurance

Every student at UNC has to submit immunization documents as well as proof of health insurance. Below paragraphs provide more information for both insurance and immunization.

Immunization Documents:

This is not urgent but you should look into the requirements. The to-do list for this will also be in Connect Carolina but probably not visible until June. Please review what is needed here: UNC Campus Health Immunization requirements.

Health Insurance:

NEW health insurance requirements. Please review health insurance information here.

Semester exchange students

Beginning Fall 2026, enrollment in the Student Blue health insurance plan will be mandatory for all international students. Waiver options will no longer be available through the Student Blue portal for international students.

  • J-1 visiting exchange students must enroll in the Premium Plan which will be billed to you UNC student account in Connect Carolina.
  • Review Health Insurance plan and rates here: uncch-brochure-25-26

One module exchange students

As an exception to the policy stated above, and in accordance with our director’s guidance, administrative waivers may be granted to J-1 exchange students who are enrolled in only one module. These students may submit alternative health insurance that meets J-1 visa requirements to the Campus Health Insurance Associate, for waiver consideration. If the waiver is approved, the student will not be required to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan; otherwise, enrollment in the Student Blue plan will be mandatory.

Once Open Enrollment begins, eligible J-1 exchange students enrolled in a single module may submit their health insurance documentation to the Campus Health Insurance Associate for an administrative waiver.

Submitted proof of coverage must be in English and meet the following requirements:·

  • Minimum coverage must provide at least $100,000 per accident or illness.
  • Maximum of $500 deductible per illness.
  • Maximum of 25% coinsurance.
  • Minimum of $50,000 provision for medical evacuation.
  • Minimum of $25,000 repatriation coverage.
